On June 30, the US Supreme Court handed down a decision in the case involving a graphic artist who sought the right to preemptively deny her services for LGBTQ+ couples who had never sought her services in the first place. Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez released the following statement:
“The US Supreme Court’s decision is an egregious and harmful step backward for the Civil Rights movement. In Texas, our LGBTQ+ community has faced dehumanization and disenfranchisement, and this ruling will have a compounding effect. Let it be known, that the archaic rollback of our freedoms will not stop at the empowerment of businesses to discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community, and no protected class will be immune.
Our office will be working with the City Attorney’s office to further examine our Non-Discrimination Ordinance and consider whether our local government can take action to further protect our community from the harms of discrimination.
I urge all business leaders in our community, particularly our Chambers of Commerce, to support efforts to protect our LGBTQ+ community from discrimination in places of public accommodation. Anything less is a demonstration of moral depravity.”
