District 5 Councilwoman Highlights the Need for a Comprehensive Approach to Reduce Violent Crime

San Antonio, Jan 23, 2024 - City Council will soon be briefed on the Violence Prevention Strategic Plan, a collaborative effort between the City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, the San Antonio Police Department, St. John’s Baptist Church, and the University of Texas at San Antonio. The plan aims to provide evidence-based strategies to prevent violence and stop it before it starts.

Councilwoman Teri Castillo, Chair of the Community Health Committee, emphasized the importance of addressing fundamental issues that may influence criminal behavior. She stated, "As a City, we must continue to take a comprehensive approach to reduce violence from a public health perspective through established programs like Stand Up SA, establishing trauma informed practices for people involved in the justice system, and expanding mental health support for all of San Antonio – especially our youth."

The Violence Prevention Strategic Plan is part of the larger SA Forward Plan developed by Metro Health, focusing on key priority areas including violence prevention, access to care, data and technology infrastructure, food insecurity and nutrition, health equity and social justice, and mental health and community resilience.

This briefing on the Violence Prevention Strategic Plan is an important step towards addressing the issue of violent crime in San Antonio. By implementing evidence-based strategies and taking a comprehensive approach, the city aims to create a safer environment for everyone.
