Alamo Community College District issued the following announcement.
Beginning Thursday, October 15, 2020, eligible high school seniors of the class of 2021 can sign up to be AlamoPROMISE Scholars by filling out the “Save Your Seat” form at www.alamo.edu/promise.
After completing a few more steps, they will be able to participate in the program, which provides “last dollar” funds to bridge the gap between their financial aid award and the cost of tuition and fees for up to three years at any of the five Alamo Colleges—St. Philip’s College, San Antonio College, Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College and Northeast Lakeview College—so they can attend college at no cost to them. Students must be a Bexar County resident attending one of the 25 participating Phase I AlamoPROMISE high schools, which are listed on the web page above, and will be eligible to enroll in Fall 2021. This year, due to COVID-19, updated information on AlamoPROMISE will be shared at the eligible high schools via virtual “Save Your Seat” events, web presentations, and information from guidance counselors and college enrollment teams.
In the program’s first year, in spite of the challenges posed by COVID-19, nearly 3,000 AlamoPROMISE Scholars are attending the district’s colleges, putting them on track to earn a degree or certificate that will prepare them for a career in a high-wage, high-demand field, leading to the economic and social mobility that ensures a better life for them and their families. The program also includes wraparound services such as advising, career counseling and help with financial, health and other issues that present barriers to completing a college education.
“Our PROMISE has now become a reality, thanks to the support of the city and county, who have championed our cause, as well as local businesses, chambers of commerce, local ISD’s and their high schools, as well as generous donors,” said Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. “We are so proud of our nearly 3,000 Scholars who let nothing stand in the way of enrolling at our colleges this fall. We also are proud of our community for supporting wholeheartedly the bold idea of making a college education possible for all our residents,” he added.
AlamoPROMISE was launched a little over a year ago and, since then, the Alamo Colleges has raised $6.5 million from private donations, including generous gifts from the Charles Butt Foundation, Harvey Najim and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas. The district also has secured a $1.1 million interlocal agreement with the City of San Antonio to support Year Two of AlamoPROMISE.
