The City of San Antonio will observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 27. Most city facilities will be closed, and in anticipation of extreme heat, the city is opening ten places for residents to stay cool from noon to 8 p.m. For those arriving with pets, a limited number of kennels and basic supplies will be provided by Animal Care Services.
On Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26, all city locations with weekend operating hours, such as libraries, senior centers, and park community centers, will be open as cooling stations.
Locations include:
- District 1: Westfall Branch Library
- District 2: Copernicus Community Center
- District 3: Southside Lions Senior Center
- District 4: Miller’s Pond Community Center
- District 5: Normoyle Community Center
- District 6: Guerra Branch Library
- District 7: Garza Community Center
- District 8: Igo Branch Library
- District 9: Walker Ranch Senior Center
- District 10: Northeast Senior Center
VIA Metropolitan Transit will provide free transportation to these cooling places on Memorial Day. Riders need only inform the bus operator of their destination. More information is available at VIAInfo.net/CoolingPlaces or by contacting VIA at (210)362-2020.
The city collaborates with nonprofit partners like Corazon Ministries, Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM), SAMMinistries, and Haven for Hope to assist the unsheltered population. Outreach teams warn about extreme heat forecasts, connect individuals with services, offer shelter options, distribute water, educate on heat-related illnesses' signs and provide transportation as needed. These efforts will continue on Memorial Day with limited staffing from noon to 8 p.m.
Corazon San Antonio will extend its hours to provide indoor day shelter and meals. CAM will offer showers and food on Saturday along with water access for the unsheltered population. Haven for Hope clients have year-round access to indoor sleeping arrangements along with food, showers, medical attention, and housing assistance.
