San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) is set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Cody Branch Library on Saturday, May 11. The festivities, which will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., include a speaking program, games, and activities designed for all ages.

The speaking program will feature remarks from Jo Ann Harris, Vice Chair of the Library Board of Trustees; David W. McCary, Assistant City Manager; and Kathy Donellan, Interim Library Director. Other highlights of the event include crafts and activities for all ages, limited-edition commemorative buttons (while supplies last), a selfie photo booth for keepsake photos, music from 1984, popular board games from the 1980s, and light refreshments.

Cody Branch Library is located in a bustling area on San Antonio’s north side. It recorded nearly 160,000 visits in 2023 alone, making it one of SAPL’s top five most visited branch library locations.

The library was opened on April 29, 1984 as the 14th branch established by SAPL. It was built on land donated by the Northside Independent School District (NISD) and named after Edmund Cody who served as NISD's Superintendent for seventeen years. Mr. Cody played a key role in promoting the community library.

Cody Branch Library underwent renovations and expansion between 1998-1999 when meeting and study rooms were added to its facilities. The Friends of Cody Branch Library funded the purchase of furniture and items for the collection upon its opening. They will be present at the anniversary celebration hosting a used book sale and recruiting new members to support the library.
