District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran recently organized a "You Matter" Health Fair at the Southside Lions Senior Center, dedicated to highlighting the importance of self-love and self-care for senior residents in the community.
Viagran emphasized the significance of nurturing oneself, regardless of age, stating, “February is not just about flowers and chocolates; it is also a time to reflect on the significance of nurturing oneself... Being able to bring organizations together and share resources, programs and do onsite checkups throughout the year allows seniors to learn all the great opportunities in the city."
The event aimed to show appreciation for senior residents in District 3 who frequent the senior centers. Viagran expressed, "Bringing special programming throughout the year reminds them that they are loved... practicing self-love and self-care is a vital aspect of overall health and happiness."
Recognizing the wealth of experiences and stories seniors have to share, Viagran stressed the importance of caring for their physical, mental, and emotional well-being to ensure they enjoy the best quality of life possible.
Various organizations participated in the event to support the seniors, including the Gonzaba Foundation, WellMed, Texas Diaper Bank, SAFD, Via, SAWS, CPS, Metro Health, and the Emergency Management Department.
The Councilwoman encouraged seniors to embrace the idea of self-love and self-care, underscoring the value of taking time to care for all aspects of their well-being. Viagran's initiative not only celebrated seniors but also aimed to provide them with valuable resources and programs throughout the year.
