The San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has been awarded a total of $30 million in grants by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The grants are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) Airport Terminals Program (ATP) and the Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program, aimed at improving airport terminals and infrastructure across the country.

Out of the $30 million, $18 million will be used for the construction of a new terminal set to open in 2028, while $12 million will be allocated for electrical upgrades in Terminal A. These grants will contribute to modernizing the airport and enhancing the overall traveler experience.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg expressed his gratitude for the grants and acknowledged the efforts of various individuals in advocating for the community's transportation needs. He specifically thanked Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, as well as Congressmen Greg Casar, Joaquin Castro, Henry Cuellar, Tony Gonzalez, and Chip Roy.

Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports for the San Antonio Airport System, echoed the Mayor's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of providing travelers with an authentic and elevated experience. Saenz stated, "As we grow and expand our operations, these grants allow us to continue to modernize our airport and improve traveler experience."

City Manager Erik Walsh emphasized the significance of the terminal expansion beyond infrastructure upgrades. He highlighted the economic benefits and improved connectivity that the expansion would bring, solidifying San Antonio's position as a hub of opportunity and growth.

In addition to the recent grants, the FAA awarded SAT a $20 million grant in February 2023 for the construction of the Ground Load Facility (GLF), scheduled to open in 2025. This facility will help the airport meet the increasing demand for air travel.

Saenz expressed the airport's commitment to keeping up with the demand, stating, "We had our busiest year ever in 2023 with 10.7 million passengers. We can't wait for the GLF to be ready, and we're just four years out from having our new terminal. Each time we're awarded more of these grants, it's an investment in our future."

The grants received by SAT highlight the airport's dedication to improving its facilities and services, ultimately enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers. For more information about SAT's nonstop destinations, please visit their official website.
