Ramiro S. Salazar, Director of the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL), has announced his retirement after 19 years of dedicated service. His last day in office will be on March 1, 2024. City Manager Erik Walsh expressed his gratitude for Salazar's contributions to the growth and success of the library system, stating that he has demonstrated unwavering commitment to fostering literacy, education, and a love for learning among all residents.

Salazar has been responsible for managing a team of over 550 employees who deliver library services to residents in San Antonio and Bexar County. Under his leadership, the San Antonio Public Library system has expanded from 20 locations in 2005 to 30 locations today. He also oversaw an increase in the library's operating budget from $20.8 million in 2005 to $53.5 million today.

Reflecting on his career, Salazar said, "It has been both a privilege and an honor to serve as the Library Director for the San Antonio Public Library. My whole library career, which has spanned more than forty years, has been driven by my commitment to making our libraries stronger and more accessible to the community."

During his tenure, Salazar championed the use of technology to diversify the library's offerings, including e-books and other electronic resources. He also led the renovation of several branch library locations, including the Carver Branch Library, which underwent a transformative $12.5 million renovation.

Salazar's accomplishments also include the development and launch of the Latino Collection and Resource Center (LCRC) in partnership with the San Antonio Public Library Foundation. The LCRC is a cultural and education resource that celebrates the literature, heritage, and contemporary life of Latinos in the United States.

The San Antonio Public Library Board of Trustees and the City of San Antonio will name an interim Library Director prior to Salazar's departure. A national search for a permanent Director will commence immediately, considering both internal and external applicants.

Salazar's retirement marks the end of his second tour with the San Antonio Public Library. Before joining SAPL, he served as the Director of the Dallas Public Library and El Paso Public Library. He also held the position of Interim Assistant City Manager in Dallas.

Salazar's dedication to public service and servant leadership has earned him recognition and appointments in the library community. He is a former President of the Public Library Association and currently serves on the Public Library Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. In addition, he was appointed by President Biden in March of 2023 to the National Board of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which advances, supports, and empowers America's museums, libraries, and related organizations on a national level.

As Salazar prepares to step away from his role, he expressed confidence in the future of the San Antonio Public Library and the dedication of the staff. He stated, "The future of the San Antonio Public Library is very bright, and I am eager to watch this organization continue to grow and improve the lives of people in San Antonio."

With Salazar's retirement, the San Antonio Public Library will embark on a new chapter, guided by a new Director who will build upon the foundation of excellence established under Salazar's leadership.
