SAN ANTONIO — According to the National Weather Service a flood watch is in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday evening with a threat of wind gusts and hail. A possible widespread 3 to 6 inches of rainfall will occur along the I-35 corridor west to the Rio Grande from tonight through Saturday evening. Due to inclement weather and the observance of Mother’s Day holiday, the City of San Antonio announces the following updates:

•    Opening of the City pools previously scheduled for this weekend has been postponed until next weekend, May 20-21.

•    San Antonio Municipal Court Bike Safety Expo scheduled for Saturday, May 13 at Stinson Airport Trailhead has been canceled.

•    Bitters Brush Recycling Center will be closed this Sunday, May 14 in observance of Mother’s Day.

It only takes one foot of rushing water to carry away a small vehicle and less than one foot of water to knock over an adult. The City encourages residents to remain aware, monitor local radio, television and the City’s official social media accounts for the latest information. Avoid roads that are prone to flooding and check the City’s current road closures on the Public Works website.

Helpful Tips

Stay informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts. The National Weather Service is a reliable source and will keep you up to date on weather in our area

Secure outdoor items: Strong winds and heavy rainfall can cause damage to outdoor items. Take the time to secure or bring inside any loose objects like patio furniture, garden decorations, or toys that could become hazards during the storm.

Check your drainage systems: Ensure that your gutters, downspouts, and drains are clear from debris to prevent water backup and potential flooding around your property. This simple maintenance task can help mitigate the impact of heavy rain.

Avoid flooded areas: Never attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads or areas. Remember, "Turn Around, Don't Drown." It only takes a few inches of moving water to sweep you off your feet or carry away a vehicle. Your safety should always be the top priority.

Stay connected: Stay connected with your loved ones and neighbors, especially those who may need extra assistance during severe weather. By staying connected, we can help one another and ensure everyone stays safe and informed.

Public Works Updates

Ten Public Works flood response teams will be available across San Antonio. Two will be stationed at each of the four service centers. Two additional crews will also be available. These crews are deployed to barricade low water crossings, if needed. If you must drive, be sure to monitor road conditions The City of San Antonio has 144 Low Water Crossing locations:

•    All have “Watch for Water on Road” postings and a vertical flood gauge

•    111 of these locations also have High Water Detection with flashing lights on the signs.

•    Never drive past a barricade. Turn around. Don’t drown.

Public Works flood management staff will be monitoring the dam water levels throughout the weekend. As the weather clears, the City’s Solid Waste Management Department and Public Works will pick up debris on public rights of way. Residents can call 311 or 210-207-6000 for debris pickup or other service needs.
