South San Antonio Independent School District issued the following announcement.
As colder temperatures become more frequent, so does the need for adequate clothing to stay warm.
The Price Elementary School community is coming together to meet those needs this holiday season on an even bigger scale.
What began as a small closet of clothes donated by Price staff has now expanded to a larger space in the school cafeteria on their performance stage. It’s called the Cobra Closet and was formed with the leadership of Ruby Lopez, a school counselor and Gabriela Orozco, who teaches third grade.
Together, they asked around for clothes and other basic necessities to help Price families. Orozco said she even received donations from her own neighborhood.
“Before I knew it, we had 15-20 different neighbors who were dropping off at our house,” Orozco said. “So far, the support from our neighborhood has been amazing.”
With the donations, Orozco says students can focus on what’s really important.
“If those basic needs aren’t met, it’s like the education piece is secondary to that,” Orozco added. “If kids or parents are struggling to put a sweater on or have clothes for their kids, then it makes it more difficult for the kids to engage in school.”
Orozco says many are donating household items, mattresses and even artificial Christmas trees to families. Principal Florinda Castillo praised the Price staff for making the Cobra Closet a reality.
“Our community is very excited because this is the second time we have done this, but with more items,” Castillo said. “I'm very proud of my counselor and teacher. They truly are the spirit of our school and community.”
