Texas A&M University-San Antonio issued the following announcement.
The Texas A&M University-San Antonio Office of Military Affairs, in partnership with the Office of Admissions, is pleased to announce all University application fees will be waived for veterans in November.
A&M-San Antonio is a Military Embracing® University with a purpose to help students in the military community and their families achieve their academic ambitions. Through the support of Military Affairs, military-connected students can build enduring relationships, connect with organizations and resources to build a strong foundation for the future.
“Waiving application fees will help military students adapt to higher education,” said Dr. Mari Fuentes-Martin, vice president of Student Success and Engagement. “We at A&M-San Antonio are excited to launch this initiative for November that will encourage future leaders to attend the University and share their knowledge and experiences.”
“I retired in February 2015 from the Army,” said Gaby Porras, a student who graduated in May with a degree in Early Childhood Education. “I tried one civilian job. It wasn’t for me. I wanted my degree. What attracted me to A&M-San Antonio is how the University embraces the military.”
Porras, a former instructor for the Army and Air Force, found a welcoming community at A&M-San Antonio that understood the struggles many veterans transitioning to civilian life. The University’s faculty-to-student ratio was the primary reason she chose to enroll.
“You actually know your professors, and they know you,” she said. “You can get the help you need. I love it here. I got to meet everyone in the Military Affairs office who are family now. As a student worker, my manager worked with me so my son could go to school, I could go to class and work and still have time to pick up my son at the end of the day.”
Porras is proud to now have a job at A&M-San Antonio as public health and safety coordinator. Her new position allows her to give back to the University community and help other veterans adapt to higher education.
“During this time of COVID-19, we wanted to find a way to help the transition to higher education,” said Richard Delgado Jr., director of Military Affairs and a U.S. Marine veteran. “Our veterans deserve this support to make applying to college as easy as possible. Waiving application fees removes a barrier to college that shouldn't exist for those who have served their country.”
A&M-San Antonio will also host Future Jaguar Fest on Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is to invite veteran students and their families to campus (outdoors only) to meet with student services and groups, explore campus life and see what it means to be a Jaguar.
