SOUTH SAN ANTONIO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT: New Shepard Middle School Principal Plans to Lead with Positivity

Volunteer

South San Antonio Independent School District issued the following announcement.

Shepard Middle School principal Maria A. Rodriguez may still be unpacking boxes at her new San Antonio home, but she’s deep in the trenches when it comes to what students can expect when school starts Aug. 12.

Rodriguez joins the South San Independent School District from San Benito, Texas where she recently served as Assistant Principal at that district’s high school. The educator holds a Bachelor and a Master’s degree in Science from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She is also certified in teaching and administration and is pursuing higher education.

Looking forward, Rodriguez wants to make sure her staff, students and their families know she’s all in.

“I’m not just passing through; I want to make this my community and I want to make sure I stick around,” Rodriguez said. “I love working with a team, working with teachers and making sure we are fostering that love of learning to other people.”

As she continues to meet students and parents, she wants everyone to know she is dedicated to getting the job done.

“Our students and their learning is going to come first,” Rodriguez said.“I love what I do and I’m going to be there helping them [students] along the way.”

This year’s educational path will bring challenges, but Rodriguez wants parents to know there is support for them as well as they travel down this road with their child.

Rodriguez has also met with the new principal at West Campus, with the goal of helping students when they eventually cross that road into high school.

“Whatever events we have they’re invited to and whatever events they have we’re invited to because our students are going to be feeding into West Campus,” Rodriguez said. “They’re not just exploring middle school, they’re exploring the world.”

As teachers and staff at Shepard prepare for what promises to be a memorable school year, Rodriguez wants her team to know she’s ready to help through any twists and turns.

“They can expect mentorship; I love working with teachers and helping them grow,” said Rodriguez. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Rodriguez is married to Christopher Lopez. He is a science teacher.
