Bexar County's appraisal office is encouraging residents to dispute the value given to them on their annual property appraisal if they feel there is a discrepancy.
“The appraisal notice is what the appraisal district thinks your property is worth,” Roy Sandoval, assistant chief appraiser with the Bexar Appraisal District, told News 4 San Antonio. “That value, once we certify a role, will get sent over to the tax collector and that’s what the city, school and county calculate the tax rates and then the tax assessor sets those rates to our value and calculates the tax amount."
If the value doesn't look right, then it's important for a property owner to dispute it.
“It’s very important for property owners, who feel that their property is overly appraised to protest their value, so that we can get that value to an agreeable number, where they feel they’re paying their fair share,” Sandoval told News 4.
“I was actually pleased when I saw (my appraisal),” Julie Ebers, a San Antonio homeowner, told News 4 San Antonio.
Ebers isn't the only one who is content with her property appraisal either.
“Personally, I haven’t (appealed the appraisal) for my home,” San Antonio homeowner Michael Garland told News 4. “I don’t think it’s really worth my time.”
