City of San Antonio issued the following announcement on March 25
Maverick Whiskey has suspended its distillery operations to dedicate their services to helping the public during the ongoing COVID-19 response. The distiller will produce up to 50 gallons of hand sanitizer per day to donate to the City of San Antonio.
“It is only by coming together that we will be able to overcome this challenging time in our history,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “I am deeply thankful to Maverick Whiskey for their generosity and dedication to helping our community and I applaud their innovation and ingenuity.”
The owner of Maverick Whiskey, Dr. Ken Maverick, approached the City after successfully testing 65%-70% proof alcohol sanitizer. The CDC recommends individuals use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to help avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The virus that causes COVID-19 is easily transmitted from person-to-person and can also live on surfaces.
Maverick is an ophthalmologist and medical director of the San Antonio Eye Bank. His wife, Dr. Amy Maverick, heads compliance for hospital physician group. He opened the distillery in 2019 as a passion project and is a direct descendant of Texas Declaration of Independence signer Samuel A. Maverick
“We care deeply about our community both as healthcare professionals and as people who call San Antonio home,” said Ken Maverick. “When this crisis came to our front door, we knew we were equipped to help our neighbors and we wanted to do our part.”
The hand sanitizer will be the used by the City to support first responders, local hospitals, and other critical operations.
