Alamo College District issued the following announcement on Feb. 14.
The Alamo Colleges District is teaming up with the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center to benefit the community we both serve as well as students at the district’s five colleges— St. Philip’s College, San Antonio College, Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College and Northeast Lakeview College—by joining forces for the “Pound for Pint” blood drives taking place at each of the colleges all year long.
For each pint of blood donated at a participating blood drive, STBTC will donate a pound of food or its monetary equivalent to that college’s Student Advocacy Center, which includes a Food Pantry. Donors will not only be helping the STBTC, which is a critical health resource for the community but also helping students at the colleges, many of whom are affected by food insufficiency.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to collaborate with our long-time partner to give back to the community that supports us and that we have served for 75 years,” said Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. “We value these partnerships and are grateful to be able to participate in this effort, which not only benefits the community but, most importantly, our students. Our Student Advocacy Centers at each college provide much-needed resources such as job assistance, food, clothing, childcare, utility and transportation assistance, counseling, and more. We are thankful to both of these partners for working with us in this innovative effort,” he added.
The colleges also have made a commitment to collect from 10% of their students. The blood drives at each of the colleges are open to members of the public as well. For information on specific dates and times, please go to www.alamo.edu, click on one of the colleges and check their events page.
