Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has launched a fundraising campaign to support San Antonio residents affected by the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The mayor has encouraged local businesses and community leaders to contribute, resulting in more than $1.6 million raised for the Feeding San Antonio Fund.
“No one in our community should go hungry,” Mayor Ortiz Jones said. “Our seniors and families deserve our support right now. In San Antonio, we are coming together to put food on the table for those who need it most. Over 100,000 households in our community will lose SNAP funding, and I am grateful to these business and community leaders for swiftly answering my call to care for the folks most impacted by these cuts.”
The city plans to distribute over $1.6 million in H-E-B gift cards to assist seniors and children experiencing food insecurity as a result of the federal government shutdown. The distribution will prioritize low-income seniors and households with young children facing financial challenges.
USAA served as the title sponsor among several major donors supporting this initiative. Other contributors include Frost Bank, Gambrinus Company, Gordon Hartman Family Foundation, H-E-B, Joeris General Contractors, IBC Bank, Kym Rampier Foundation, Spurs Sports and Entertainment, The Latino Foundation of the San Antonio Area Foundation, Valero, the Office of Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, and the San Antonio Area Foundation.
The San Antonio Area Foundation will oversee management and financial administration of donations. Distribution will be handled through the city’s Human Services and Metro Health Departments.
Residents interested in donating can find more information at the San Antonio Area Foundation website.
