The City of San Antonio, Bexar County, and the Collaborative Commission on Domestic Violence (CCDV) have begun their annual observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October. The initiative includes events and public engagement opportunities to highlight the issue of domestic violence in the community.

On October 3, the CCDV will hold its 6th Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Symposium. This event is designed for both professionals and community members and will feature presentations from local and national experts on domestic violence. For those unable to attend in person, recordings will be made available on the CCDV website.

Residents are encouraged to participate by lighting or decorating their homes and businesses in purple as a symbol of support for domestic violence awareness. Community members can also share photos of their displays on social media using the hashtag #PurplePorchSA.

“Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a reminder that our neighbors may experience struggles we never see, but our community has resources and support to offer,” said Deputy City Manager María Villagómez.

The upcoming release of the CCDV’s 2024 Annual Statistical Report will provide data about domestic violence trends in San Antonio and Bexar County.

“Working together as a coordinated system of services, we can help people affected by domestic violence and build a safer and healthier community,” said The Honorable Monique Diaz, Judge of the 150th Judicial District Court.

Support services are available for those affected by domestic violence through Family Violence Prevention Services at 210-733-8810 or by calling 911 in emergencies. More information about resources and upcoming events can be found at CCDV.org.
